About Employee Breaks

The Employee Breaks documentation describes how to implement employee breaks for both your NCR® Aloha® Quick Service and Aloha Table Service order entry systems. The purpose of this documentation is not to dictate or interpret the intentions of the labor laws, but to offer a comprehensive tool to assist you in being compliant with the labor laws in your jurisdiction. It is your responsibility to research and know the laws that govern breaks in your area. Failure to do so, could result in extensive fines and stiff penalties.

The Employee Breaks documentation begins by familiarizing you with an unrestricted break configuration, and then introduces you to the advanced features required for more complex labor laws. If the jurisdiction in which the restaurant is located does not require employees to take breaks, you can use the default paid and unpaid breaks configured in the system without any consequence. You do not have to implement additional break features, such as placing enforcements on breaks, configuring waive break and break reminder messages, and enabling penalty pay.

If the jurisdiction in which the restaurant is located does require your employees to take an allotment of breaks, we highly recommend you configure, or at least view, the optional advanced break features listed in this document. Implementing only one break feature may satisfy some jurisdictions, where others may require you to implement the full spectrum of break features.

An employee break is when an employee goes off the clock for a short time, usually from 15 minutes up to an hour, for a rest or a meal, and then returns to work. The jurisdiction in which the restaurant resides governs the breaks employees are required, by law, to take. The Employee Breaks feature is designed so that no matter what the laws for your jurisdiction, you can configure the Aloha POS system to meet the requirements and help you monitor your employee breaks.

Configuring Employee Breaks

The Employee Breaks feature allows you to efficiently handle such things as paid or unpaid breaks, minor employees, recurring or non-recurring breaks, and much more.

Configuring and using unrestricted employee breaks

This section discusses the configuration requirements for the unrestricted employee breaks pre-loaded in the system. You must complete the steps in this section to implement an unrestricted break setup. If your jurisdiction has more stringent labor laws requiring your employees to take breaks under very specific guidelines, complete this section, then refer to "Configuring employee breaks with restrictions" for how to build on the unrestricted configuration to meet your requirements.

Configuring and using employee breaks with restrictions

In the previous section, "Configuring and using unrestricted employee breaks," you learned how to configure and use unrestricted employee breaks. With this section, you build upon that knowledge to create more complex break rules and place restrictions on employee breaks. This section covers the following topics:

  • About break rules and violations
  • Qualifying for a break rule
  • Specifying the hours needed to earn a break
  • Placing enforcements on break minutes
  • Implementing splittable breaks
  • Implementing the ability to add breaks from the FOH
  • Implementing on-duty meal breaks
  • Implementing waive break and break reminder messages
  • Implementing penalty pay requirements
  • Refreshing POS data
  • Using employee breaks with restrictions
